Understanding the Gartner Magic Quadrants for Supply Chain Planning

If you are new to the Gartner Supply Chain Magic Quadrants, here’s the quick overview. There are two types of Gartner Magic Quadrants for Supply Chain Planning. Gartner publishes the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Supply Chain Planning System of Record (SOR) and the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) System of Differentiation (SOD).

What’s the difference between the different supply chain magic quadrants?

Gartner defines Supply Chain Planning System of Record as “the foundational planning layer that supports the “integrate” maturity stage (Stage 3 in Gartner’s five-stage maturity model) of demand and supply planning processes today and in the future. 1

The Gartner Magic Quadrant for Sales and Operations Planning System of Differentiation is defined by Gartner as “a software solution that helps to enable a Stage 4 (or possibly higher) maturity S&OP process.2

Gartner’s five-stage maturity model for sales and Operations Planning

To understand what this means clearly, let’s look at the Gartner maturity stages. Gartner has a five-stage maturity model for sales and operations planning:

  • Stage 1: React
  • Stage 2: Anticipate
  • Stage 3: Integrate
  • Stage 4: Collaborate
  • Stage 5: Orchestrate

As indicated by the names of the different stages, as you move along the stages you advance in supply chain planning functionality. At a stage 1 maturity, you are more reactive in nature and are less likely to have integrated systems. At stage 2, you move from a reactive planning process to an anticipatory planning process. Where you can more proactively respond to changes in the marketplace. At a stage 3 maturity, your systems are more integrated setting the stage for a stage 4 maturity where you can collaborate better across cross-functional teams. At a stage 5 maturity, you expand your horizon even more by looking at planning in a more holistic way across your entire network and cross-enterprise.
